What happened
bdnews24 and BSS reported that five Neo-JMB-linked attackers stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan on the night of July 1, 2016, killing 20 civilians and two police officers during an approximately 12-hour hostage siege. Operation Thunderbolt killed the five attackers and rescued 13 hostages. In 2019, the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal convicted seven of eight accused and sentenced them to death, while acquitting one. In 2023, the High Court reduced the seven sentences to imprisonment until death; a 2026 report says leave-to-appeal petitions remain pending before the Appellate Division.
